Lighting Up Horizons: BEL's Visionary Approach to System Expansion
We are proud to support Belize's journey toward Sustainable Development Goal 7: ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all by 2030. Despite challenges such as material shortages that slowed expansion efforts in 2023, we have made significant progress over the past five years, extending our grid to 62 previously unserved communities, providing electricity to approximately 2,100 additional households.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to expanding access to electricity, particularly in unserved peri-urban and rural areas, and to making connections more accessible and affordable. This commitment is reflected in our revised Customer Connection Policy, which aims to remove financial barriers to establishing or upgrading connections.
We are also preparing for a transformative leap with the integration of Distributed Generation, particularly solar PV technology, which will enhance our operational efficiency and diversify our service offerings. By providing both grid-tied and off-grid solutions, we aim to make sustainable electricity accessible to even our most remote customers.
